Mississippi

Mississippi mandates sex education, which is permitted to be either “abstinence-only” or “abstinence-plus;” however, the law states that “abstinence-only” education shall remain the state standard for sex education in public schools. Mississippi does not mandate HIV/AIDS education.

Sex education must:

  • Stress abstinence
  • Include information on the importance of sex only within marriage
  • Be medically accurate
  • Be age-appropriate
  • Not teach that abortion can be used to prevent the birth of a baby

Boys and girls shall be separated according to gender into different classrooms [Repealed effective July 1, 2021].

If HIV/AIDS education is provided, it must:

  • Stress abstinence
  • Be age-appropriate

Parents must be given notice of and may opt out of sex or HIV/AIDS education.
